Super Mario Bros. Was a smash hit at the box office and fans are wondering if characters like Yoshi or Waluigi will appear in the sequel.

Mario and Donkey Kong have had a long history, both as allies and enemies. The puzzle-platforming franchise, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, has brought the two Nintendo characters back to their roots. The Mario vs. Donkey Kong series found success on Nintendo's various handheld consoles as Mario works his way through complex environments in pursuit of rescuing tiny Mini-Mario toys. Including main entries and spinoffs, this sub-franchise features seven games spanning the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, and Nintendo 3DS.

There are over 130 levels that offer challenges that require running, jumping, and using the environment to solve puzzles. Players must outsmart obstacles and collect all the Mini-Marios throughout each level. Boss battles against Donkey Kong await at the end of each world.

This remake of Mario vs. Donkey Kong introduces a host of exciting new features. A two-player co-op mode allows teammates to control Mario and Toad, fostering a sense of teamwork in puzzle-solving. A Casual Mode has been added for a more relaxed play experience, with no time constraints and scattered checkpoints throughout the levels. The game also unveils entirely new worlds with unique mechanics to discover. The visuals have been revamped with new graphics, and the music has been re-orchestrated, enhancing the overall gaming experience.

3 Princess Peach: Showtime! Gives the Titular Heroine a Welcome Spotlight

Princess Peach is one of Super Mario's most beloved characters and, despite her growing presence in multiplayer titles, it's been some time since she's been able to headline her own game. 2005's Super Princess Peach was a Nintendo DS bestseller and now Peach is finally receiving another starring vehicle for the Switch in 2024. There was speculation that Princess Peach: Showtime! could be a new entry in the Super Princess Peach series, but it's heading for an even more exciting adventure.

Princess Peach: Showtime! uses a theatrical stage play aesthetic combined with a partner for Peach, Stella, who can transform into an interactive ribbon, reminiscent of Super Mario Odyssey's Cappy. Princess Peach Showtime! has shown off some impressive costume-based transformations for its titular protagonist, including a swordfighter, pastry chef, and even a kung fu master.

A villain named Grape and their Sour Bunch goons have taken over the Sparkle Theater, transforming a joyous performance into a disaster. Partnering with Stella, the theater's fairy guardian, Peach sets out to stop them. As Peach journeys through the theater, she gains magical abilities through transformations. These transformations grant her new skills and outfits, allowing her to overcome challenges and defeat enemies.

The stage-play theme seems to be a spiritual successor to the motif used in the mainline game Super Mario Bros. 3, and each of Peach's transformations will dictate the gameplay loop of the individual plays she'll perform in. With any luck, this new game will just be the start of Princess Peach's expanded role in Mario's world.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Update Adds Mario Wonder Content

The final Super Smash Bros. Ultimate update for the Nintendo Switch will feature content from Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Princess Peach: Showtime!

Nintendo’s Paper Mario franchise has been one of Mario’s most popular spin-off series thanks to its combination of RPG mechanics and playful papercraft renditions of Mushroom Kingdom’s finest. Paper Mario has taken some ambitious swings in its later games, not all of which have connected with audiences.

The GameCube’s second entry in the series, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, is frequently singled out as a high point for the RPG series. Nintendo has surprised its fans on The Thousand-Year Door’s 20th anniversary with an HD upgraded port of the GameCube classic. Modern fans will now finally have the opportunity to play one of Nintendo’s greatest games. Along with the original Super Mario RPG title for the Super Nintendo, the Mario & Luigi series, and Paper Mario, The Thousand-Year Door is widely seen as the culmination of the character's ventures into the RPG genre overall.

In addition to its charmingly colorful world, the original version of the game featured a whimsical and touching story fitting of the Super Mario universe, as well as a creative turn-based combat system that incorporated rhythm-based actions to keep players engaged and deal maximum damage on enemies. There's not much known yet about the technical aspects behind this upgraded version of the GameCube title, but as of now, it looks like it's taking the more conservative remaster approach as opposed to a full-blown remake.

Luigi's Mansion has finally started to pick up steam over the past few years as one of the best Mario spin-off games centered around different characters. Luigi's Mansion 3 for the Nintendo Switch helped introduce new audiences to the supernatural series, and now the franchise's second entry, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, is set to receive a remastered port on June 27, 2024, for the Switch. When this game releases, fans will have access to all three Luigi's Mansion games on their Switch.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is a sequel to the 2001 game Luigi's Mansion. In this game, Luigi is tasked by Professor E. Gadd to capture ghosts using a special vacuum cleaner called the Poltergust 5000. The game takes place in Evershade Valley, a spooky location where the Dark Moon has shattered. The shattered pieces of the Dark Moon are causing the ghosts to turn hostile.

Luigi must travel through various haunted mansions, solving puzzles and battling ghosts along the way. The game features several different types of ghosts, each with unique weaknesses. Luigi can use the Poltergust 5000 to suck up ghosts, blow air to reveal hidden objects, and tether ghosts to slam them for extra damage. By capturing ghosts and collecting hidden objects, Luigi can earn money to upgrade his equipment and gain access to new areas of the mansions.

It will be interesting to see if Nintendo reveals any more features coming to the remaster, like integrating Luigi's Mansion Arcade as an alternate game mode, to deliver an even more complete package. The arcade video game was developed by Capcom and was effectively a spinoff of Dark Moon, turning the original experience into a rail-shooter title.
