During a recent Ludeman Center visit from Congresswoman Diana DeGette, we discussed the importance of including women in more research studies. Neill Epperson, MD, noted that in adverse childhood experience surveys, women are more likely to experience four or more adverse experiences, and for women, these experiences have a profound effect on depression, anxiety, and cognitive function. On her recent visit to the Ludeman Center @CUAnschutz, First Lady Jill Biden met with our team of researchers to discuss their ground-breaking work in women's health research, including David Kao, MD. As an associate professor in the Division of Cardiology, Dr. Kao addressed that some heart failure therapies do not work as well in women as in men. “There are also issues of inequity in access. We have a therapy like a heart pump, and a woman is less likely to be offered that than a man. Even when offered, women are less likely to accept it." An exciting time at the Ludeman Center when Congresswoman Diana DeGette joined our researchers and directors to discuss the significance of women's health research. In attendance was one of our researchers and associate professor of the Department of Biomedical Informatics, Laura Wiley, PhD. She shared her recent work focusing on big data and finding correct data sets that accurately represent heart failure in women. When it comes to exploring sex and gender in research, a recent article from @Nature says that it's important to embrace the complexities and "lean in with courage and creativity to interrogate the fascinating complexity of sex- and gender-related impacts. This could make a difference in a diverse set of contexts, including more personalized dosing of prescription medications, better protection for women by air bags in car crashes, and equitable access to health services. It is imperative that researchers engage deeply with the mechanisms and factors that underlie apparent differences between groups, to improve the health of all. "We've made great progress, but there is still so much work to do," said Judy Regensteiner, PhD, Ludeman Center director and distinguished professor of medicine. During First Lady Jill Biden's recent visit to the Ludeman Center, Dr. Regensteiner discussed the significance of funding for women's health research and its impact on women across the lifespan. As our center celebrates its 20th year dedicated to researching cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and the intersection of mental and physical health, we are optimistic to see this investment in women's health and the awareness this brings to our ground-breaking work.
