Ingredients needed to make cool whip cookies with cake mix.

This recipe takes just three ingredients.

  • Sugar Free Cake Mix. My cookies were made with lemon cake mix.
  • Whipped Topping. Use the tubbed frozen topping (like Cool Whip). To keep this sugar free, opt for a sugar free whipped topping. Your topping should be soft but, not completely thawed.
  • Sugar Free Powdered Sugar.
  • Optional- egg.

Tips for making the best cool whip cookies.

Use the tubbed (sugar free or low sugar) whipped topping that is found in the freezer section. The canned whipped topping or cream will not work in this recipe.

More helpful tips for you.

  1. Adding an egg to the batter is an optional ingredients. The egg will help these cookies stay together, make the cookies more dense and chewy, and more firm.
  2. If you cannot find the cake mix you want, try using a basic sugar free yellow cake mix with a bit of food coloring and extract for flavor. Sugar free Jello may also work with adjustments as needed.
  3. You can make this keto low friendly by using a low carb tubbed topping (most are) and a keto cake mix.
  4. It is normal for this dough to be a bit sticky. Refrigerating it for 15-20 minutes can help make it easier to work with.
  5. Make these cookies really fudgy by using a sugar free chocolate cake mix and chocolate chips.
  6. These cookies tend to spread while they are baking. It is best to leave plenty of space between them on the baking sheet for this reason.

How to make Sugar Free Cool Whip Cookies.

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Bake Time: 12 minutes .
Servings: 24 cookies, depending on how they are scooped .

  1. Preheat your oven to 350. Prepare your baking sheets for nonstick. I like to use parchment paper or a baking mat for a recipe such as this one.
  2. Place the cake mix in a large bowl and use a whisk to break up any lumps.
  3. Add the whipped topping to the bowl and mix the ingredients until just combined.
  4. Place the sugar free powdered sugar into a shallow bowl. Then use a cookie scoop to scoop out the dough, roll the dough between your hands to make a ball, and roll the ball in the sugar so that the dough becomes covered with the powdered sugar. Place the cookies on to your prepared baking sheet about two inches apart.
  5. Bake the cookies for 10 (for a chewy cookie) to 12 (a more crisp cookie) minutes or until the edges begin to brown.
  6. Let the cookies sit on the baking sheet for 10 minutes to set before transferring them to a wire cooling rack to fully cool and set.

Expert Tip👉 Do you have to roll the balls of dough in the powdered sugar alternative? The powdered sugar (alternative) gives these cookies that 'crinkle' look as well as making these cookies sweeter. It is not however an essential ingredient to the cookie itself.

How to store cake box cookies.

Leftover cookies should be stored in an airtight container with parchment paper between layers. When properly stored, these cookies should keep for a couple of weeks when refrigerated or up to a couple of months when frozen.
