Critics Consensus
Compelling, but challenging, The Devil Next Door can be uncomfortable viewing, but essential interviews and an empathetic eye come together to shed light on an important story.
Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald One of the most powerful things you'll see this year. Nov 20, 2019 Full Review Ashlie D. Stevens Salon.com That said, it's a chilling, often intriguing survey of an event that many of us may remember, but in our current political landscape is worth revisiting. This documentary - like history - should be deeply considered despite its imperfections. Nov 13, 2019 Full Review Dorothy Rabinowitz Wall Street Journal This saga of multiple legal battles, alive with passion and uncertainty, is filled with proofs leading here, twists leading there, until finally there are facts. That journey never loses an iota of its riveting force. Nov 6, 2019 Full Review Gabriella Geisinger Digital Spy Unfortunately, despite being a difficult but necessary watch, all The Devil Next Door did was leave this almost-question hanging in the last 15 minutes. Nov 13, 2019 Full Review Joel Keller Decider The Devil Next Door is a good revisiting of a case that has faded from a lot of people's minds. But to those who remember it, or even those who weren't around back then, it'll bring this important case back to life. Nov 13, 2019 Full Review Kate Hudson Pajiba It was a lot to fit into 5 episodes and could have benefitted with one or two additional eps in order to flesh out more of what was happening around the trial, instead of in it. Despite this, [it] is still worth your time. Nov 8, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Gareth v A thorough and compelling docu-series about a man accused of being a war criminal. While it is rather linear in it's telling of events, it does interview most of the remaining players to give you a good understanding of the power this trial had for it's time, and for the Jewish community. Rated 4/5 Stars •Rated 4 out of 5 stars06/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Wow. What an intense docuseries. The court room scenes had me on the edge of my seat and in tears. Absolutely incredible. Rated 4/5 Stars •Rated 4 out of 5 stars01/09/23 Full Review tom m Interesting. It seemed like a well-balanced treatment. Rated 3.5/5 Stars •Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member There is only one absolute and certain conclusion to this documentary - extremely long lasting and deeply felt need for revenge can possibly lead to self-deception and blind justice. This is in many senses the stories of post WW2, the US and Israel in a combined nutshell, and about them no one can ever be determined. Rated 4/5 Stars •Rated 4 out of 5 stars01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Netflix has been selecting some interesting material for their documentary machine and this one will likely create a greater emotional response than most. Rated 4/5 Stars •Rated 4 out of 5 stars01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Fantastic, gripping, docs-series about a modern Nazi war criminal trial that reinvented how these trials are heard. Both justice and injustice are served, but the story itself keeps you getting if it's one that you are unfamiliar with. Absolutely worth watching in today's climate. It was overturned on appeal, but when the Berlin Wall came down it led to new documents being accessed and, eventually, another trial, where the 91-year-old Demjanjuk was found guilty as an accessory to 28,500 murders as a guard at Sobibór, but not found to be Ivan the Terrible of Treblinka.
John Demjanjuk died at a home for the elderly in Bad Feilnbach, Germany on 17 March 2012, aged 91. As a consequence of his appeal not having been heard, Demjanjuk is still presumed innocent under German law. Following his death, his relatives requested that he be buried in the United States, where he once lived.
Finally another Amazon highlight that forces you to binge the miniseries! The Devils Hour shows how important a selected ensemble is. Not only Jessica Raine and Oscar winner Peter Capaldi shine in the nerve-wracking 6 episodes. Every role, no matter how small, is extraordinarily well cast.
In the final scene of the film, Arvin once again goes hitchhiking. There, he's picked up by a long-haired man who's heading to Cincinnati. The film ends with Arvin looking over into the distance as a radio address outlines President Johnson's imminent decision to bring in mandatory drafting for the Vietnam War.
Demjanjuk was later extradited to Germany where he was convicted in 2011 of war crimes for having served at Sobibor extermination camp. While awaiting his appeal hearing, Demjanjuk passed away at age 91 in a nursing home. Under German law, his guilt was revoked, reinforcing his presumed innocence.
In the end it turns out that Lucy and Isaac's problems come from echoes of their past lives, which have been caused by an oddly noble Gideon interfering. There's a chilling narration from Gideon saying "I've died more times than I care to remember," with time going in a loop like a never-ending record.
The Devil's Hour season 2 will begin filming sometime in early 2023. Amazon's Dan Grabiner had this to say about the renewal: “We're thrilled with the audience response to The Devil's Hour, and can't wait to share the next chapter of this mind-bending story.
Great news for fans of The Devil Is a Part-Timer, as the beloved anime series has been confirmed for a third season set to premiere in July 2023. To add to the excitement, a new trailer has been released, teasing the addition of a new character named Acieth Alla, voiced by Madoka Asahina.
